Yea sure. Planned a Moonlight solo backpack trip into Sequoia national park. Arranged for the permit in advance and arrived 30 mins b4 ranger station was supposed to close - It was closed.
So I left a note and hit the trail. Kinda easy with maybe 8 miles to first legal camping backcountry spot. Dark n no moon - Never saw the moon that whole nite. Maybe 2 miles n I sensed something but could not figure out wot. Wood stop take back pack off and look around and only me. Did this over n over with flashlight and never saw or heard anything. I started to worry and became exhausted. I figure 6 miles n 2 trail I said fuk it and stepped out on a rock outcrop and set up simple camp and went to sleep.
Then I feel my foot being kicked. Wake up n its a ranger n I figure shoot its not legal to camp here n thats y he wakes me early.
He says get dressed n come with me. We walk maybe 30 feet to trail and he says look down. I see my foot steps n his and paw prints. Said when he came to work and found my note he decided to go to the camp I was going to be at and give me the permit, but noticed the mountain lion paw prints along side of me or behind me all the way - from first .25 mile to where I set up temp camp.
That is all there was to it. Kinda boring I know but given at that point I had only viewed a Mountain Lion Tail in brush from a distance and later a head - and only once the full body but not head or tail and later after this tracking with me event, I have only once viewed a full total mountain lion.
On another trip years later with a bunch of friends in canyon de chelly, on a multi day hike in, we entered a side canyon and when we came out there were clear fresh lion tracks in wet sand. It stayed with us the full day but none of use ever viewed it. We just knew going into each small canyon that when we came out we would see new fresh tracks.
I figure one of two things on the first story. Lion was full up with food and besides in that area no reported Lion attacks. Lion was curious? Or it sensed that I was cool about animals. Trust this a close up
encounter with such n I wood no better then to run but 4sure wood not be passive.
