It goes without saying that the most likely original scenario is he was shitfaced, couldn't keep his cockholster shut, and then received what I would describe as an "enthusiastic beating".

The odds of him actually being able to identify these people assuming he only saw them once while drunk just before getting his bell rung seem minuscule at best.
